Based: Ladysmith | Kwazulu Natal
Ladysmith Black Mambazo is one of South Africa’s most celebrated and influential musical groups, internationally renowned for its rich harmonies, spiritual depth and mastery of the traditional Zulu vocal styles isicathamiya and mbube. Founded by Joseph Shabalala in 1960 in KwaZulu-Natal, the group has become one of the country’s most enduring cultural ambassadors.
The ensemble achieved global recognition through its collaboration with Paul Simon on the landmark 1986 album Graceland, a moment that introduced its sound to audiences around the world and helped establish Ladysmith Black Mambazo as a defining voice in global choral music. Over the years, the group has built a remarkable international career, earning multiple Grammy Awards and performing across the world while remaining rooted in South African heritage and message-driven music.
Known for music that carries themes of peace, faith, resilience and unity, Ladysmith Black Mambazo continues to balance heritage and relevance in live performance. Their concerts remain powerful, uplifting and instantly recognisable, making them a standout choice for festivals, headline concerts, cultural events and premium corporate or diplomatic occasions.
Because this is a legacy act, one small update note: recent reporting confirmed the passing of longtime member Albert Mazibuko on 5 April 2026, so I would avoid listing current members on the HDS page unless that lineup has been directly confirmed by the group or management.
