Asili – The Originals is a dynamic Cape Town-based vocal ensemble bringing together the richness of African choral music with contemporary and classical influences.
The name “Asili”, a Swahili word associated with origin, roots or authenticity, perfectly reflects the group’s musical identity – a celebration of African heritage presented through sophisticated vocal arrangements and contemporary performance.
Asili’s distinctive sound is built around the human voice, combining powerful harmonies, intricate vocal arrangements and traditional African choral undertones with influences spanning classical music, opera, jazz and popular contemporary repertoire.
Their ability to move between musical genres gives the ensemble considerable versatility. A performance can shift from an emotive African choral piece to an operatic or classical arrangement before moving effortlessly into jazz or recognisable popular material.
PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTS
Asili has appeared on established Cape Town arts and cultural platforms, including performing as part of Viva The Arts’ Morning Melodies at the Baxter Theatre, where they featured alongside a diverse programme of leading vocalists, musicians and performing artists.
Their combination of vocal precision and authentic African musical expression makes Asili particularly effective for corporate events, conferences, gala dinners, awards ceremonies, opening performances, cultural celebrations and international incentive groups.
The ensemble can create a powerful opening moment for an event or provide a sophisticated musical interlude, with the natural impact of unaccompanied voices allowing them to perform in environments where a conventional band may not be suitable.
