Barry Hilton, affectionately known as “The Cousin,” is one of South Africa’s most established and enduring comedians. With a professional career dating back to 1983, Barry has built an international reputation for his distinctive blend of observational humour, physical comedy and sharp, relatable storytelling.
Over more than four decades, Barry has performed in 20+ countries and delivered thousands of performances across South Africa, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Mauritius and beyond. His broad appeal and predominantly clean style have made him particularly successful in the corporate events market, where he works as a stand-up comedian, MC and keynote speaker.
A significant international milestone was becoming the first South African stand-up comedian to perform at London’s renowned Comedy Store. His television career has included numerous appearances as well as his own SABC3 comedy show, Funny You Should Say That. He has also appeared in film and became widely recognisable through major South African advertising campaigns.
In 2014, Barry was honoured with the Lifetime Achiever Award at the Comics Choice Awards, recognising his contribution and influence on South African comedy.
More recently, Barry has expanded his corporate offering into inspirational speaking, using humour and personal storytelling to explore resilience, perspective and navigating life’s challenges. His keynote work centres on the idea that humour can be a practical tool for connection, coping and resilience.
