Based: Cape Town
Sibanye is a South African world music group with its roots in Cape Town and making music that is a fusion of afropop, folk and township jazz. Their name Sibanye is a Xhosa word meaning “Together As One” and is also the name of a song of reconciliation that led to the formation of the band with its group members being from the City Bowl and surrounding townships like Nyanga, Gugulethu and Cross Roads.
After the success of the Afrikaans-Xhosa collaboration in writing the Sibanye song, the founder Leon Albert Oosthuizen paid visits to the remote areas of Venda, Lesotho, Swaziland, the countryside of Limpopo and Mpumalanga along with the townships in Gauteng and Cape Town to learn and find further inspiration for songs that would lead to their authentic
rainbow album: Sibanye. Their second album: Sesifikile Ons is Hier followed, displaying their unique sound in some more original and well-known songs.
With the power of music, these musicians bring unity across cultures and is a beacon of hope for our beloved country, South Africa. The music of Sibanye celebrates the spirit of a rainbow nation through its proudly South African style with songs encompassing all eleven official languages. At live performances, they also incorporate iconic, beloved songs from South African soil.
The band has performed at various public stages and festivals, among other the V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre (New Year’s Day), KKNK in Oudtshoorn, Gariep Festival in Kimberley (with an exclusive live broadcast of their concert on the national airwaves of RSG), SU Woordfees in Stellenbosch and Olive Festival in Prince Albert.
