Ndere Troupe is a world‑renowned cultural performance ensemble from Kampala, Uganda, dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich diversity of Uganda’s traditional music, dance, storytelling and theatre. Founded in 1984 by Dr Stephen Rwangyezi, the group takes its name from the endere (flute), symbolising beauty, unity and the shared musical heritage that connects cultures across the world.
Origins & Cultural Mission
What began under a mango tree in the mid‑1980s has grown into one of East Africa’s most enduring cultural institutions. Dr Rwangyezi, then a teacher with a passion for heritage and community expression, envisioned a performing arts ensemble that would both educate and entertain — using dance, music and drama as vehicles to preserve Uganda’s traditions and promote unity across the country’s diverse 56 ethnic groups.
Ndere Troupe’s performances are deeply rooted in Uganda’s traditional repertoire. Their shows feature over 40 authentic dances and songs drawn from different regions of the country, accompanied by indigenous instruments such as drums, the adungu (arched harp), amadinda (xylophone) and endere flute — blending energetic movement with vivid cultural storytelling.
Performance & Style
The troupe presents dynamic live shows that weave traditional song, rhythmic dance, storytelling and instrumental music, celebrating themes of history, courtship, community life and celebration. Performances often include ceremonial, comedic and educational elements, and they are designed to engage audiences of all ages, both locally and internationally.
Ndere Troupe’s work also reflects a philosophy of “edutainment” — using performance art to educate audiences about heritage and contemporary social themes, from farming practices to health and community issues.
Legacy & International Reach
Over the decades, Ndere Troupe has become Uganda’s cultural ambassador, touring in Europe, North America, Asia and Africa, and performing at festivals, state functions, corporate events, weddings, anniversaries and cultural showcases. Their performances are a vibrant introduction to Ugandan culture for both local audiences and visitors from around the world.
The ensemble is also central to the Ndere Cultural Centre, an expansive cultural hub in Ntinda‑Kisaasi — complete with traditional architecture, gardens and an amphitheatre where shows are held regularly on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, often paired with Ugandan cuisine and community gatherings.
Today, Ndere Troupe continues to train new generations of performers, keep traditional arts alive, and share the rhythms and stories of Uganda through world‑class performance.
