Raised in Soweto, Mandla Mlangeni is a young Composition graduate from the University of Cape Town, with a host of skills ranging from teaching and performing to arranging and composing diverse styles of music. He is currently involved in composing and performing music with several bands in South Africa. He has toured extensively with the Cape Town Opera’s production of Porgy and Bess and the Mandela Trilogy to the UK (2009 and 2012), Israel(2010), Mlangeni has performed with several jazz musicians such as Marcus Wyatt, Barney Rachabane, Hotsix Mabuse, Hugh Masekela, John Davies and Afrika Mkhize, to name a few. Mlangeni has participated in numerous shows, musicals most notably ShowTimes’ production of Jersey Boys tour to Singapore (2012).
Mlangeni has experience in several other genres of music such as classical, and has entered several competitions most notably the SAMRO Overseas Scholarship (2012 runner up), orchestra courses, eisteddfods, and graded examinations. Mlangeni has taught and performed extensively while a student at the UCT. Mlangeni has participated in an exchange program in Oslo at the Nowergian Music Academy (2007/2008).
Mandla is currently embarking on a multitude of project designed to showcase his original music and still collaborate with many of South Africa’s celebrated musicians. He is an adept musician in many styles of music and can contribute immensely to the music scene in South Africa and beyond. He envisages his music integrated into the very fabric of contemporary music culture.
