Lex LaFoy is a South African Rapper, Writer, Creative Project Manager and Community Development specialist from Durban. Lex made a name for herself as a freestyle, battle emcee and performance poet between 2004-2012 under the moniker Lexikon. Making her debut onto mainstream media in 2005, she was selected to represent her city in the first ever MTV Base VJ search. In 2012 Lex was nominated for Best Female and Best Mixtape in the first ever South African Hip Hop Awards.
In 2013 Lex was one of 30 South African artists to be selected for the exclusive Red Bull Bass Camp. In May, 2014 Lex LaFoy and DJ Doowap represented South Africa in the Purple Velvet all-female hip-hop tour across Germany, Switzerland and Austria. They performed 17 shows over 5 weeks arranged by independent label Springstoff. In 2016 Lex was voted one of SA’s hottest female rappers by GQ Magazine. In the same year she began focusing on building her Television portfolio, and featured on Muvhango (SABC2), Keeping Score (SABC2), Next of Next Week (Etv), Amandla (Lionsgate) and had her first cameo as herself, in ETV’s star studded music drama Hustle, directed by Award Winning Director Jahmil X.T Qubeka.
On the 25th of November 2017 Lex LaFoy released her independent debut album Honey Bass which received reviews by leading music and art platforms such as AfroPunk, OkayAfrica, Texx and The City, Cosmopolitan Magazine, Slikour on Life, We-Are-Awesome and more.
In 2018 Lex returned to Johannesburg and cameoed in MTV Shuga: Down South S2 directed by award winning director, actor and scriptwriter Thishiwe Ziqubu. On the 2nd of December 2018 Lex LaFoy performed at the first South African edition of Lyricist Lounge (USA) renowned for their work alongside Eminem, Talib Kweli and others. In 2019 Lex released her 5th recorded project 22 – a 6 track EP.
In 2019 she also extended her company Heartistree Productions’ portfolio to include that of creative agency – sourcing background actors for Queen Sono directed by Kagiso Lediga for Netflix. She also featured in the cross-country collaboration Grind Mode Cypher (Between the USA and SA) and performed at Back To The City Hip Hop Festival. On the 9th of August 2019 Lex LaFoy hosted the first Phakama Dadewethu Women’s Day event which featured an all-female line up and was sponsored by Bernini. From January to April 2021 Lex, after returning to her home city, cofounded Maleningi Records where she served as Artist and Project Manager.
From July 2021 – July 2022 Lex presented and produced an inspirational segment called The Wealth & Wellness Show on Durban Youth Radio (DYR105.1fm). In August she performed at the 53rd Legends Barber Shop opening, while also coordinating further events for them in Durban.
On the 1st of September 2021 Lex LaFoy released her sixth recorded project NewWorldDaughter, and in February 2022 Lex LaFoy featured in the Post Post Digital Concert recorded at Constitutional Hill, Johannesburg. In May 2022 Lex LaFoy was also awarded funding by ConcertsSA where she produced and performed in the Sister Sundays All-female concert alongside her all-female band. Lex also released her single with accompanying music video Pretty Boys in 2022 produced by Martini and in 2023 released the art film for Nomthandazo featuring Maskandi Queen Dr Buselaphi Gxowa and directed by Nomakhomazi Dewarin (eGqeberha). On the 8th of April 2022, International Art Magazine Nataal, names Lex LaFoy the first lady of Durban hip Hop.
Lex LaFoy is also the founding Director and Project Manager of Peace4, which hosted Peace4Sydenham Free Concert In The Park on the 29th of October 2022 and Peace4Wentworth Free Concert In The Park on the 4th of November 2023. Peace4 is Lex LaFoy’s registered NPC through which she hosts events aimed to create more peace, unity, social cohesion and family-friendly spaces in communities affected by gang violence and drug-related crime.
In August 2023 Lex LaFoy and her all-female performed at the opening night of the The SA Women’s Art Festival at the Durban Playhouse. In October 2023 Lex was selected as a judge on the Poetry Africa International Festival Slam Competition hosted by the Creative Centre For Arts (UKZN). Lex LaFoy is one of 100 South African artists to receive SAMRO Music Creation Support Funding for 2023, through which she released her 7th body of work titled The Lexikon 2.0 Project on the 18th of October 2024. The album features Bongani Fassie, iFani, Lia Butler and others.
In 2024, Lex LaFoy also featured alongside Kwesta, Jeremy Loops, Mpho Molikeng and the Mzansi Youth Choir in the #SamsungOpenVerse Challenge Ad released on the 7th of August 2024 in collaboration with AI – having created a song in support of our South African Olympic Athletes.
On the 28th of March 2025 Lex LaFoy released her latest single Frisk, together with a music video/film produced by SAMA-Award winning director and editor Slimdogmillionaire. On the 26th of June she was the only female rapper featured on a Durban-full Sho Leyo Remix and on the 5th of September 2025 she released her latest single and running anthem, Tebogo Mahange.
