Based: Cape Town
Leon Albert Oosthuizen is a Cape Town-based musician, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist whose musical journey began at an early age, excelling particularly as a pianist during his formative years. His early achievements include a UNISA merit award, placement on the roll of honour, completion of Grade 8 practical and Grade 6 theory, as well as earning a distinction in music in matric. He also participated in SABC recordings, attended masterclasses at the Stellenbosch University Conservatory, sang in leading school choirs, performed in a light music orchestra, and played bugle and trumpet in the cadet band.
While studying accounting at Stellenbosch University, Leon continued to pursue music. He coached the Wilgenhof residence serenade group Die Kraaie and produced the first serenade-group CD released at the university, Die Plek in Harmonie. He also published the updated Wilgenhof songbook Fluitjiefywerits.
Leon has performed with various community bands as a pianist and vocalist and has appeared in theatre productions including the award-winning Altyd Jonker. During a two-year stay in the United Kingdom he discovered the piano accordion in Paris, inspiring him to add the instrument to his repertoire. He later further developed his songwriting through studies at the Cape Town School of Songwriting with Clive Ridgway.
In 2010 Leon released the album Goue Eeue, featuring musical settings of poems by Uys Krige. He also gained recognition as accordionist for the Mediterranean music group Anteros, performing at venues and festivals such as the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre, Villa Pascal, Brooklyn Theatre, and the Suidoosterfees. In 2012 he collaborated with musicians from Cape Town and surrounding townships to form the Afro-world music group Sibanye.
With his diverse musical background, songwriting ability and multi-instrumental talent, Leon Albert Oosthuizen brings a distinctive and engaging live music experience to concerts, festivals, weddings and corporate events.
