Based: Johannesburg
Arguably one of the most unique components of Kwela music in South Africa, the celebrated pennywhistle trio.
Kwela Tebza have taken their distinctive sound to various international audiences, having performed from Singapore to Nigeria, Australia to Brazil, Austria, Sweden and Thailand. Kwela Tebza has been performing since 1994, and has 4 successful albums to its name. The three Soweto-born brothers who make up the popular group – Tebogo, Tshepo and Mpho – have created an act that is unique and contemporary, but undeniably South African, a feat not dissimilar to that of their father Elias “Shamba”Lerole, and relative Big Jack Lerole, during the 1950’s. They continue drawing inspiration from this colourful and musically productive era, fusing elements from Sophiatown and South African Jazz with contemporary beats and modern production techniques, to create their characteristic brand of “Kwela Tebza Kwaito”. Couple this distinct sound with the Lerole brothers’ electrifying stage presence, and it is no surprise that the act has taken off across South Africa and beyond, and that their list of loyal fans include top names like Danny Glover!
