Mkokeli “Kim” Masala is one of South Africa’s most accomplished percussionists and African instrumentalists, renowned for his exceptional rhythmic ability and dynamic stage presence. Born and raised in Langa, Cape Town, Kim began exploring African musical instruments at the age of eight, inspired by the vibrant marimba bands that filled his neighbourhood.
His musical journey began through the Amy Biehl Foundation, where he joined both the brass band and marimba band at primary school under the guidance of mentors Mr. Tsepo Leew and Henry Jean. He later expanded his musical training by participating in an after-school programme run by Jika Marimba.
In 2001, Kim co-founded the percussion and brass ensemble Abavuki, which has since grown into an internationally recognised act. Since 2003, he has toured extensively across the globe, captivating audiences with his energetic performances. From 2006 onwards, he has continued performing internationally with both Abavuki and IBuyambo.
Throughout his career, Kim has shared the stage with some of South Africa’s most respected musicians, including Dizu Plaatjies, Lungiswa Plaatjies, Derek Gripper, Kholeho Mosala, Pops Mohamed, Bongani Sotshononda, Nkosenathi Koela, Neo Muyanga and Simphiwe Matole.
Kim also contributed significantly to Dizu Plaatjies’ award-winning albums African Kings and Ubuntu: The Common String, both of which received South African Music Awards (SAMAs), further cementing his reputation as a leading percussionist and collaborator.
Beyond the music stage, Kim has showcased his talents in theatre productions, including The Stranger with Brett Bailey at the 2024 National Arts Festival in Makhanda. He has also toured internationally with the Netherlands-based production South African Road Trip – Good Hope, demonstrating his versatility as both a musician and performer.
Today, Mkokeli “Kim” Masala continues to inspire audiences around the world through his passion for African music, percussion and cultural performance, making him one of South Africa’s most respected ambassadors of traditional and contemporary African sound.
