The Gugulethu Tenors are one of South Africa’s premier Afro-operatic vocal groups, renowned for their breathtaking harmonies, powerful stage presence, and inspiring story of perseverance. Hailing from the township of Gugulethu in Cape Town, the quartet has captivated audiences across South Africa and internationally with a unique blend of classical opera, African music, gospel, and contemporary favourites.
The group rose to prominence following the release of their self-titled debut album in 2011, quickly establishing themselves as a household name in the South African music industry. Their journey began as high school students at Fezeka High School, where they were selected to compete in the Prompt Voice Search competition. Winning the competition marked the start of an extraordinary career that has seen them perform on some of the country’s biggest stages.
The Gugulethu Tenors have represented South Africa at major national and international events, including performances during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. They have delivered standing ovations at leading arts festivals such as the KKNK, Aardklop Arts Festival, Cultivaria, and Klein Karoo Klassique, while also entertaining audiences at prestigious corporate events and gala occasions. Their performances have been enjoyed by world leaders, dignitaries and international celebrities, including Oprah Winfrey, Chris Rock and Mariah Carey.
Their repertoire is both diverse and accessible, featuring timeless operatic masterpieces such as O Sole Mio, Nessun Dorma and Nella Fantasia, alongside popular classics including The Prayer, Miriam Makeba’s Pata Pata, and original compositions such as O Afrika! and Nyamezela. By combining classical vocal traditions with African rhythms and contemporary influences, they have created a distinctive sound that appeals to audiences of all ages and cultures.
