Francois Pienaar

1995 Rugby World Cup-Winning Captain | Leadership Speaker | Businessman | Rugby Legend
Biography

François Pienaar is one of South Africa’s most celebrated sporting leaders, best known as the captain who led the Springboks to their historic 1995 Rugby World Cup victory on home soil.

Pienaar represented South Africa in 29 Test matches between 1993 and 1996 and captained the Springboks in every one of them. His leadership of the 1995 World Cup-winning team — and the iconic moment when President Nelson Mandela presented him with the Webb Ellis Cup at Ellis Park — became an enduring symbol of sport’s ability to contribute to unity and nation-building.

Following his Springbok career, François joined Saracens in England, serving as player, captain, coach and ultimately CEO. Under his leadership, Saracens secured their first major trophy in 127 years.

Today, François draws on his experiences in elite sport, business and leadership to speak on leadership under pressure, teamwork, resilience, transformation, high performance and creating a shared vision.
