Based: Johannesburg
A well-known sports broadcaster on radio and TV, Derek has managed to turn his love for sport, media and travel into a successful career.
This is not entirely accidental, as he played rugby up to provincial level before realising that if a professional career in rugby was not possible, he had to find another career in sport.
While studying marketing in Port Elizabeth he co-hosted the afternoon drive on Bay FM and was soon snapped up by the region’s biggest station, Algoa FM, where he was the sports anchor.
In March 2008 he moved up to Johannesburg to become the afternoon sports presenter on 94.7 Highveld Stereo as well as a presenter on Supersport.
His responsibilities on the radio quickly grew and he took on sports duties across 94.7 and Talk Radio 702 and his presenting gigs at Supersport proliferated.
Derek has been the face of All Out Rugby, Inside Edge, SuperFan during the 2011 Rugby World Cup and he was a prominent member of The Road to London/London Calling series in the build up to the Olympic Games in London.
Derek has worked in various exotic destinations across the globe, including two Cricket World Cups, in the Caribbean and England, the Proteas tour to India in 2010 and various scuba diving hotspots which he visited as part of the Top Travel team, a spin off to the popular Top Billing franchise.
A natural MC, Derek has hosted numerous high-profile events including the recent SA Cricket Awards and the Launch of the Champions League.
In addition to broadcast and MC work, Derek is a regular columnist for Sports Illustrated South Africa and Sport Elizabeth.
