Based: Johannesburg
Buhlebendalo Mda, also known as Buhle, is a South African singer-songwriter and performer best known as a co-founding member and former lead vocalist of the acclaimed a cappella group The Soil. Born and raised in Soweto, she became widely recognised for her distinctive voice, powerful stage presence and role in shaping the group’s signature sound.
Alongside her success with The Soil, Buhlebendalo has developed her own identity as a solo artist, storyteller and creative force. Her 2020 debut album Chosi marked an important step in that journey, introducing a body of work that blends soul, African spirituality and personal reflection. The album was released through Native Rhythms under exclusive licence to Universal Music South Africa.
More recently, Buhlebendalo has continued to evolve her career beyond group performance, with reporting in 2023 and 2024 noting her departure from The Soil and her growing focus on her solo path, creative independence and wider work as a multidimensional artist.
With a live presence that is soulful, expressive and unmistakably South African, Buhlebendalo is well suited to concerts, festivals, premium cultural programming and curated corporate or private events looking for an artist with depth, authenticity and strong audience connection.
