Biography

Based: Cape Town

BlackRoots Marimba is a dynamic and culturally grounded marimba ensemble hailing from Gugulethu, Cape Town (South Africa). Formed in the early 2010s, the band has grown into one of South Africa’s most distinctive marimba groups — championing indigenous music, community engagement, and creative expression.

Origins & Development

BlackRoots Marimba began when three women from Gugulethu — driven by a shared love for marimba music — started playing together in 2010. Through perseverance and community support, they secured sponsorship for their instruments in 2012 from Arm in Arm in Africa via the J.L Zwane Church, officially forming the ensemble.

Under the leadership of Sibahle Sky Dladla — a multi‑talented African instrumentalist who studied African music at the University of Cape Town — the band has expanded beyond traditional marimba to include instruments such as the mbira, uhadi bow, and even electric guitar in their arrangements, helping craft a signature neo‑traditional indie sound.

Musical Style & Repertoire

BlackRoots Marimba blends rhythmic marimba grooves with a fusion of traditional African melodies, contemporary influences, and original compositions. Their music reflects a deep respect for heritage while also exploring innovative sonic textures, making their performances both engaging and culturally resonant.

Performances & Recognition

Since their formation, BlackRoots Marimba has performed at a wide range of venues and events throughout South Africa, including:

  • Moshito Music Festival (Johannesburg)

  • Woman’s Day celebrations at Baxter Theatre (Cape Town)

  • Mother City Live Festival

  • Aquila Game Reserve performances

  • Corporate and private celebrations

Their presence on stage demonstrates both the versatility and vitality of marimba music in contemporary settings.

In 2013, the group was honoured with the Western Cape Award for “Promotion of Indigenous Art Forms”, reflecting their contribution to keeping traditional music alive and relevant.

Mission & Impact

More than just performers, many members of BlackRoots Marimba use their music as a platform for cultural education and empowerment. Through workshops, community events, and youth engagement, they strive to inspire new generations to embrace African musical traditions, while also fostering pride and creativity within township communities.

Today, BlackRoots Marimba continues to evolve — blending heritage, innovation, and community spirit — and remains a compelling voice in South Africa’s vibrant music scene.
