Another brilliant fusion of classical training, African tradition and superb Eurocentric opera! You can’t argue with the result when you hear the Afro Tenors, Africa’s famous opera singers.
Whether performing in their Madiba shirts or in black tuxedos, Given Mabena, Lucky Sibandan and Agos Moahi, get standing ovations. Afro-operatic pop sensations The Afro Tenors are becoming a household name in South Africa since the release of their debut album. They have performed at some of SA’s top events and festivals, SHARED stages with local and international headliners, and been featured extensively in local and international media, whilst their fan base continues to expand, covering a wide and diverse audience.
Their journey to success, which started almost 10 years ago as three dreamer went for their dream of being on stage, and has been widely publicized, serving as an inspiration to many.
Performance highlights include the Presidential Inaugaration Concert, proving they stun listeners whether it’s to larger public events or smaller corporate events. They have also represented South Africa proudly in FIFA launch in Lisbon, Portugal and the National Day Celebration for South African Embassy in Copenhagen (Denmark).
While their friends enjoy Kwaito, Hip Hop and Rap, the Afro Tenors pursue their intrinsic love of Opera, a genre which is not traditionally associated with the township. By incorporating contemporary and delicate ethnic elements in their music, they have made the genre their own, capturing the hearts of audiences across South Africa and beyond with their raw talent.
The three Afro Tenors have an excellent repertoire. From widely known light classical hits popularized by the other famous three tenors to the best of African traditional songs like Meadowloands, Thula Thula, Malaika and their tribute to Mandela – Rolihahla Mandela.
The Afro Tenors’ ambition goes beyond success as performers – collectively they aim to be role models for South Africa’s youth and, through their singing, to showcase the RICHNESS and diversity of South Africa’s cultural heritage.
