Based: Johannesburg

Africa Soul is a Johannesburg-based vocal ensemble that reimagines classic soul and blues through a distinctly African lens. Their repertoire draws on the timeless sounds of artists such as Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding, while reshaping these well-known songs with African harmonies, fresh arrangements and renewed stage energy.

Founded in January 2020 by Beverly Bryer and Adam Howard, Africa Soul brings together current Soweto Gospel Choir members, performers from African Mamas, and other experienced professional singers, creating a sound that is both sophisticated and uplifting while remaining a separate entity with its own identity.

The group is highly adaptable and can be booked in a range of formats, from a smaller vocal ensemble with keyboard accompaniment to a larger production featuring an expanded brass and band section, including players from the Johannesburg Big Band. This flexibility makes Africa Soul well suited to corporate events, theatrical performances and private functions looking for something polished, soulful and memorable.

With its concept of taking songs “from the American South to the African South,” Africa Soul offers a live experience that feels both familiar and original, appealing to audiences across generations.
