Biography

Tim Modise is one of South Africa’s most respected and influential broadcasters, journalists, television personalities and public speakers. With a distinguished media career spanning more than four decades, he has played a significant role in shaping South Africa’s broadcasting landscape, particularly in political journalism, current affairs, public dialogue and the country’s transition to democracy.

Renowned for his authoritative presenting style, insightful interviewing techniques and ability to facilitate meaningful conversations, Tim has become a familiar and trusted voice across South African television and radio.

His broadcasting career began at Radio 702 in 1980, before progressing through some of the country’s leading radio and television platforms, including Metro FM, SAfm, Power FM, SABC, M-Net, Carte Blanche, eNCA, Soweto TV and the BBC.

Tim was among the pioneers of politically focused talk radio in South Africa, introducing discussions around social issues, community development and public affairs during the late 1980s, at a time when political broadcasting was heavily restricted.

During South Africa’s historic transition from apartheid to democracy, he became a prominent voice in political journalism, covering the unbanning of liberation movements, the release of Nelson Mandela, constitutional negotiations and the country’s first democratic elections in 1994.

One of his most significant broadcasting achievements was participating as a panellist in the historic 1994 presidential debate between Nelson Mandela and F.W. de Klerk, which attracted an international television audience estimated at 800 million viewers.

Throughout his career, Tim has interviewed numerous prominent national and international leaders, including South African presidents, political figures, business executives and influential personalities. His interviews are recognised for their depth, professionalism and ability to address complex subjects with clarity and balance.

His television career includes presenting and producing current affairs programmes such as The Modise Network on eNCA and Tonight with Tim Modise on Soweto TV. He has also worked as a presenter on M-Net’s investigative journalism programme Carte Blanche.

Beyond broadcasting, Tim has held several influential leadership and business positions. He served as the founding chairman of Proudly South African, an initiative promoting South African products, services and economic development.

He also held a senior communications role with the organising committee for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, contributing to communications surrounding one of the most significant international sporting events hosted on the African continent.

His professional experience extends into business leadership, entrepreneurship, political analysis, media production and corporate communications.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to broadcasting, Tim was inducted into the South African Radio Hall of Fame in 2011. His work in communication, reconciliation, community development and human rights has earned him numerous additional accolades.

As a highly experienced Master of Ceremonies, conference facilitator and keynote speaker, Tim brings gravitas, intelligence and professionalism to corporate and public events.

His extensive knowledge of South African politics, economics, leadership, business and current affairs makes him particularly effective at moderating high-level discussions, interviewing prominent executives and facilitating conversations involving complex or sensitive subjects.

Tim has hosted and facilitated prestigious events, including the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Nelson Mandela’s 85th Birthday Ubuntu Awards and the Loerie Awards.
