Wandile Mbambeni is a SAMA-nominated South African singer-songwriter, guitarist and compelling live performer whose music brings together soul, African folk, country blues and contemporary singer-songwriter influences.
Born in Mthatha and raised in East London in the Eastern Cape, Wandile’s path to music was anything but conventional. Growing up in a sports-driven family, he initially pursued a career in professional rugby, playing scrumhalf and competing for both the Border U19s and Eastern Province Kings U21s.
Despite his success on the rugby field, music ultimately proved impossible to ignore. A self-taught guitarist, Wandile made the bold decision to leave professional sport behind and dedicate himself to songwriting and performing.
His musical philosophy is beautifully simple: “three chords and the truth.”
It is an approach that has shaped a deeply personal sound built around honest storytelling, soulful vocals, acoustic instrumentation and songs exploring love, family, faith, loss, identity, healing and the complexities of everyday life.
Musical Career
Wandile’s early releases established him as an exciting new voice within South Africa’s singer-songwriter community.
His song “Lovers Like You” was recognised by respected South African music platform Texx and the City as one of its standout South African songs, while his Maturation EP further introduced audiences to his distinctive blend of folk and soul.
In 2017, Wandile signed with Gallo Record Company, one of South Africa’s most established record labels.
His debut album Kwakumnandi followed in 2018, earning critical attention and producing “Wanted and Loved,” featuring Shekhinah, which reached No. 1 on Jacaranda FM.
International Recognition
Wandile’s music has steadily taken him beyond South Africa.
In 2023, he appeared on the international Apple TV+ music series My Kind of Country, filmed in Nashville. The series brought together emerging country and roots artists from around the world and featured global music personalities including Mickey Guyton, Orville Peck and Adam Blackstone.

Wandile’s more recent body of work has further developed his soulful country and African folk influences.
His EP You Love Who You Love has surpassed one million streams and includes songs such as “I Don’t Regret It,” “Hey Lord,” “A Father’s Prayer” and the title track “You Love Who You Love,” featuring Langa Mavuso.
“I Don’t Regret It” debuted at No. 1 on the iTunes Blues Top 100 in South Africa, Eswatini and Malawi, while “Hey Lord” generated millions of views through TikTok.
The project demonstrates Wandile’s strength as a storyteller — using deceptively simple arrangements to explore deeply personal experiences and universal emotions.
