Born and raised in Orlando, Soweto; Timothy Moloi grew up in a home filled with song. It is this love for music, and his flair for infusing familiar and beloved standards with a new freshness, that has made him a favourite with audiences throughout South Africa. With his smooth-as-velvet voice and masterful range, Timothy is one of South Africa’s most extraordinary talents.
He returned to South Africa in 1999, having completed his studies at Ohio Wesleyan University in the USA. Since then Timothy has led a busy performance schedule, and has performed with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, the Eastern Cape Philharmonic, the Electric Pops Orchestra, the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra and the Soweto Gospel Choir.
Timothy Moloi performed the song “Hope” at the OPENING CEREMONY of the FIFA 2010 WORLD CUP at Soccer City to an estimated global audience of 500 million viewers. His double SAMA (MTN South African Music Awards) nominated debut album LOVE THAT MUSIC received critical acclaim and is available on iTunes.
Television performances have included the MTN SOUTH AFRICAN MUSIC AWARDS, MISS SOUTH AFRICA, SABC3 JOBURG POPS, the SABC2/Sowetan COMMUNITY BUILDER OF THE YEAR AWARDS, the SA RUGBY AWARDS and the MNET “HEROES AGAINST CRIME” AWARDS, as well as several guest appearances on popular programs such as MORNING LIVE, EXPRESSO, TOP BILLING, AFRO CAFE, SPIRIT SUNDAE, WORLD TODAY, TML, ETV SUNRISE, AFTERNOON EXPRESS, MUSIEK ROULETTE and NOOT VIR NOOT.
He has appeared in South African stage productions at the Lyric Theatre (MOTOWN GOLD), the Baxter Theatre (COMING HOME), the Joburg Theatre (THE LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS), the State Theatre (A TRIBUTE TO FRANK SINATRA), the Sand du Plessis Theatre (THE ELVIS LAS VEGAS EXTRAVAGANZA) in Bloemfontein, the Artscape Opera Theatre (BRING ON BROADWAY) in Cape Town and The Playhouse (GOSPEL EXTRAVAGANZA CONCERT) in Durban. He has also played featured roles in two of Janice Honeyman’s pantomimes ALADDIN and SLEEPING BEAUTY at the Joburg Theatre.
Timothy Moloi has performed at several major South African sports events including the Vodacom Tri-Nations, the SA Open and the Summer Cup. He also performed at the CRICKET SA SEASON LAUNCH and the send-off banquet for the Springboks, prior to their victory in the 2007 Rugby World Cup, as well as at the announcement of the South African Paralympic Squad and the TEAM SOUTH AFRICA OLYMPIC KIT LAUNCH prior to the London 2012 Olympics.
A most memorable experience for him was singing for President Nelson Mandela, Graca Machel, and King Willem Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands at Douw Steyn’s private game reserve Shambala in the Waterberg. He performed at THE ENTHRONEMENT OF THE KING OF THE BAFOKENG at the Sun City Superbowl and at the ACRES OF LOVE Benefit at the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles.
Other highlights have included performances at the AFRICA PEACE AWARDS, Oprah Winfrey’s LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE event, 2010 FIFA WORLD CUP BID BANQUET, NEDERBURG WINE AUCTION, FANCOURT BALL, FNB STARLIGHT POP OPERA concert and at the opening of the ICC Arena in Durban, on the same bill as Al Jarreau and George Benson. He has also performed at the SOCCEREX GALA BANQUET, ALGOA FM CONCERT IN THE PARK, CARNIVAL SYMPHONIC POPS, MACUFE FESTIVAL, RSG KUNSTEFEES, US WOORDFEES FESTIVAL, GARIEPFEES, ABSA KKNK, AARDKLOP ARTS FESTIVAL, GRAHAMSTOWN NATIONAL FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS, 702 MOTHER’S DAY CONCERT AT THE ZOO and at the RMB STARLIGHT CLASSICS, on the same bill as Katherine Jenkins.
He toured with Vuyani Dance Company to the USA where he performed in Gregory Maqoma’s EXIT/EXIST at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston and the American Dance Festival in North Carolina. He also performed in MY FAVOURITE SWINGS, LOVE SWINGS, and MY BIG BAND VALENTINE with the Johannesburg Big Band at the Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City.
On 27 February 2016 he will perform in AFRIKA IN AFRIKAANS with Gloria Bosman and Anna Davel at the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre and on 13 March 2016 at the Sanlam Music Festival with Corlea Botha, Nadia Beukes and Jannie Moolman at the Spier Amphitheatre in Stellenbosch. Timothy will once again star in ALWAYS & FOREVER: A TRIBUTE TO LUTHER VANDROSS at the Joburg Theatre from 31 March to 3 April 2016. The concert was first staged to critical acclaim and a sell-out audience in August 2015. Tickets are available at Webtickets.
