Based: Johannesburg

Theo Baloyi is an award-winning South African entrepreneur, business leader and the founder and Group CEO of Bathu, one of Africa’s most recognised home-grown sneaker brands. His journey from accounting professional to building a proudly African retail business has made him a compelling voice on entrepreneurship, leadership, resilience, innovation and purpose-driven business.

Before entering entrepreneurship full-time, Theo built his professional foundation in accounting and finance, working for PwC in South Africa and the Middle East, including Dubai and Saudi Arabia. His experience encompassed asset management, strategy and financial management, giving him a strong commercial grounding before taking the leap into building his own company.

In 2015, Theo founded Bathu with a clear ambition: to create a world-class sneaker brand that could authentically tell an African story. The journey was anything but immediate. He spent approximately 18 months developing and refining the product, facing repeated rejection from manufacturers before successfully producing Bathu’s distinctive Mesh Edition sneaker. His first 100 pairs were sold directly into communities including Alexandra, Soweto, Midrand and Tembisa.

What began as a township-born idea has developed into a significant African retail business. Bathu has expanded its physical retail footprint while creating hundreds of employment opportunities, with Theo describing the company’s wider mission as one of reigniting hope and creating sustainable employment.

Theo’s entrepreneurial achievements have earned him considerable recognition. He was named among Forbes Africa’s 30 Under 30 in 2019, received recognition in the Entrepreneur of the Year® competition, and was named GQ Business Leader/Businessman of the Year. Bathu itself has also been recognised among Africa’s admired brands.

Theo Baloyi as a Speaker

On stage, Theo brings the realities of entrepreneurship to life through the story of building Bathu — from identifying an opportunity and backing an unconventional idea to dealing with rejection, developing a product, building a team and scaling a brand.

His story speaks particularly powerfully to organisations navigating growth, transformation and an increasingly competitive African business environment. He demonstrates how commercial success can be combined with cultural relevance, employment creation and a strong sense of purpose.

Central to Theo’s philosophy is the Bathu message, “Walk Your Journey” — a concept that reflects the importance of owning your individual path, remaining resilient through setbacks and continuing to move towards a larger vision.
