Based: Johannesburg
Simeon Hamman grew up, quite literally, in the entertainment industry, with his mother being the exceptionally successful singer, Sonja Heroldt and his father, whilst involved in the film industry, an equally successful producer and director.
Simeon often says “he grew up next to the stage” because from as early as 3 years of age he was already performing alongside his mother on stage. Simeon inherited a wealth of experience during his childhood years and not only developed an incredible voice but also learnt to play guitar whilst writing his own songs. The family was all about music and the seed was sown.
Simeon’s musical experience didn’t stop at home though, shortly after completing high school he left for Europe and spent two years working and performing in London before coming home to complete his studies at The South African Music Institute where he met up with Piet De Wet. This dynamic duo soon started working on their own style of music and in 2008 opened for Bryan Adams at the Excel Centre in London. At 26, with his studies at South African Music Institute behind him the calling could no longer be ignored, Simeon finally put together Color Up!
While Simeon, on Vocals and Acoustic Guitar, is the driving force behind Color Up the standard band consists of a guitarist, sax / trumpet player and a keyboard player which allows them to play a soft background set but will incorporate a drummer and bass player for their larger, more vibrant performances.
This incredible group, whilst still exceptionally young themselves, have taken on some of the most mature and melodic music in the industry. Their beautiful harmonies and simple acoustic interpretations of popular songs are exquisite.
Their repertoire is very acoustic and easy-listening with a touch of jazz and includes songs like Haven’t Met You Yet (Michael Buble) to Tears In Heaven (Eric Clapton).
Whilst currently focusing their performances on well known covers, Simeon is in the process of writing his own material and recording his debut album, due for release in 2012, and the group will often incorporate one or two of their originals in their live performances.
With that said, the original songs are often hard to identify as they fit right in amongst Michael Buble and Jason Mraz!
The songs are all familiar, well known tracks delivered in a sophisticated yet youthful way by these incredibly talented musicians.
