Based: Cape Town

SboNdaba Dance (listed on HDS Entertainment) is a Cape Town–based contemporary dance company and academydedicated to using movement, choreography and creative expression to empower young people, build professional capacity in the performing arts and cultivate uniquely South African choreography.

Origins & Mission

Founded and led by acclaimed dancer and choreographer Sbonakaliso “Sbo” Ndaba, SboNdaba Dance is a registered non‑profit company focused on creating employment, delivering high‑quality dance training and expanding performance opportunities for under‑resourced performing artists — especially youth from township communities in the Western Cape.

The company operates out of a former Methodist church in Cape Town’s Observatory district, where dancers from across townships such as Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Elsies River, Philippi and Langa train rigorously and perform work that is culturally grounded yet universally expressive.

Artistic Style & Vision

SboNdaba Dance’s performance style blends African contemporary dance, theatrical movement and narrative storytelling, often exploring themes of identity, community resilience, environment and shared humanity. Their choreography is distinctively South African in origin but resonates with international audiences, reflecting rhythm, precision, emotion and cultural depth.

The company also runs outreach teaching programmes, extra‑mural classes and community workshops designed to increase accessibility to the performing arts, develop teaching skills among students, and help communities recognise their creative assets.

Performance Highlights & Recognition

SboNdaba Dance regularly presents work on both local and national stages. In 2025, artistic director Sbonakaliso Ndaba was honoured as the JOMBA! 2025 Legacy Artist at the prestigious JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience, celebrating her long‑standing contribution to dance and training in South Africa — a testament to the company’s influence and artistic excellence.

Their repertoire includes productions that have been featured at major cultural platforms — from Artscape Theatre’s celebrations of democracy and unity to outdoor performances in community parks and festivals — integrating powerful movement with evocative themes that speak to contemporary South African life.

Community Impact

Beyond professional performance, SboNdaba Dance plays a significant social role in South African arts, offering training, mentorship and employment pathways for emerging dancers, many of whom are also trained as teachers and community facilitators.

Their work highlights the power of dance to transform lives, foster resilience, inspire creativity and build bridges across communities — making SboNdaba Dance both an artistic force and a catalyst for positive change.
