Nick’s primary academic and intellectual focus has been in the area of business strategy. In addition to his doctoral studies and MBA research, he teaches and consults in this area over the past 25 years, has been focused on understanding the dynamics of competitive advantage in business.
The complexities of the South African political economy and its implications for the formulation and execution of strategy are of great interest to him, as are general management and leadership at the C-Suite level. Organisational design and organisational development with particular regard to change processes are another of Nick’s focus areas.
Prof. Binedell is a professor in the area of strategy and leadership at the Gordon Institute of Business Science of the University of Pretoria where he was the founding Dean (2000-2015).
After a career in business, including a period as a general manager, he began a career in academia. He completed his PhD at the University of Washington in Seattle, where he was a Boeing Scholar (1983 – 1986).
In 1998 he was invited to establish a new business school for the University of Pretoria to be based in Johannesburg, South Africa. His mandate was to establish a world class business school that would meet the needs of the 21st century for South African business and business leaders.
In June 2015 the Academy of International Business elected him as global Business Educator of the year.
