The Hout Bay Music Project (HBMP) is a community-focused musical education and performance initiative based in Hout Bay, Cape Town, South Africa. Founded in 2003 by local resident and music educator Leanne Dollman, the project was born from the need to provide arts education, a safe creative space, and personal development opportunities for children from the disadvantaged communities of Imizamo Yethu and Hangberg Harbour Village.

HBMP offers free daily lessons across a wide range of disciplines — including violin, viola, cello, double bass, drums, djembe, voice, dance, and music theory — with instruments, tuition, transport, and daily snacks all provided at no cost. Its holistic approach incorporates homework supervision, life-skills talks, and group outings, fostering discipline, teamwork and confidence alongside musical excellence.

The project’s students participate in multiple performing ensembles and have toured internationally, including performances in Austria and the Netherlands. Locally, they have performed at prestigious venues such as Artscape Theatre, Table Bay Hotel, The Westin Grand, and CTICC. HBMP also makes its ensembles available for corporate and private events throughout South Africa.

Through its commitment to overcoming social inequality and nurturing young talent, the Hout Bay Music Project has become a beacon of artistic growth, community pride, and cultural expression — empowering over 80 children and continuing to broaden its reach and impact.
