Field Band refers to the music and performance groups supported by the Field Band Foundation — a South African educational and development programme that uses music, dance, and performance to empower young people and build life skills. The Field Band model combines marching band music, percussion, brass instruments, choreography, and vibrant show routines, giving learners opportunities to perform, learn, and grow through the arts.

Origins & Mission

The Field Band Foundation was established in 1997 as a community-centred initiative designed to unlock opportunities and life capabilities for children and youth in disadvantaged communities through participation in music and performance. Over the years, it has expanded into a national movement, with bands across South Africa that engage in training, performance, and personal development activities.

The Foundation’s core mission is to help participants become empowered, resilient and self-confident young people who are opportunity-ready and contribute positively to society, using music as a vehicle for learning, teamwork, discipline and creative expression.

What the Band Does

Field Bands are not just musical ensembles — they are holistic youth development programmes that integrate:

  • Instrumental music performance with brass, marching percussion and rhythm sections

  • Choreographed drill and movement (similar to marching band tradition)

  • Life skills and social inclusion training through structured education programmes

  • Community engagement and leadership activities that build confidence and teamwork skills

  • Performance experiences at local events, national showcases and cultural celebrations

Each Field Band is led by trained tutors and supported by a curriculum that blends musical excellence with personal development, ensuring participants grow both as musicians and as individuals.

National Championships & Community Impact

One of the most visible highlights of Field Band activity is the annual National Championships, where bands from across the country perform themed routines that showcase their musical skills, creativity and storytelling through performance. These championships are a celebration of youth talent and community spirit, often featuring large-scale massed performances and competition across musical and visual categories.

Field Band programmes also foster inclusivity, working with partner schools like Con Amore School to ensure children with diverse abilities, including learners with autism, can participate fully in musical education and performance — expanding access and impact through initiatives like “Music for All”.

Beyond competitions, Field Bands frequently perform at public events, community functions and civic celebrations. Their colourful shows and rhythmic precision make them engaging performers for festivals, corporate events, school showcases, and public ceremonies.
