Looking for a ‘duo with a difference’? Well, look no further. Doppler Effect is Cape Town’s newest duo, featuring singer/guitarist/harmonica player, Mark Badham-Thornhill, teamed up with ‘The SkinDoctor’, Brian Woodland on Roland V-Drums. With almost 40 years of musical performance experience each, Doppler Effect delivers the live ambience that comes from putting a great singer/guitar player together with a real drummer for that full band feeling, but with a small footprint. The Duo can fit into an intimate restaurant, a bustling pub, or open air venue. We are also available for corporate functions, weddings and private parties. It can also fit easily into your budget.
Mark Badham-Thornhill was born in the 60’s and nurtured on a healthy dose of ‘wooden music’ – the sounds produced by six strings and carefully seasoned spruce soundboards; voice and instrument as one. Singing was as natural as walking for Mark, who started performing from his first year of schooling, taking part in competitions and eisteddfods. Mark has achieved great recognition by being a winning performer in the Shell ‘Road to Fame’ and the Bothners ‘Forever Young’ competitions. With influences coming from such greats as CSN, Bread and America, and duos like Simon and Garfunkel he realized that the harmonies held the key to his creativity. Voice and guitar; that’s all you need to tell a story in 3 minutes.
Brian ‘The SkinDoctor’ Woodland has been playing drums since the mid 70’s. After spending 2 years in the old SADF as an entertainer, Brian returned to civilian life and has played in countless bands over the years, and covering all genres of music. He earned his nickname of ‘The SkinDoctor’ by performing drum solo’s where he would literally leave his drum-kit, and the stage, during his drum solo and play amongst the audience, on tables, walls or anything close by. The name has stuck. Brian has played at countless well known music venues around Cape Town over the span of his playing career, as well as at countless festivals, wine farms, theatres, pubs, and private events. While a rock drummer at heart, Brian uses his decades of live drumming experience to adapt and play to suit the mood of any occasion.
