Based: Durban
Chico Muya was born in the DRC.
He arrived in South Africa at the tender age of 3 years, with his family.
It wasn’t until after high school that he realised music was his passion.
In 2014, he was convinced that it was time to take a leap of faith, so he dropped everything and decided to take the nerve racking journey of being a full-time musician.
The likes of Ed Sheeran, George Ezra and Labryinth, kept him inspired in times when giving up seemed like the most logical decision.
He started off playing in bars, and any venues that would give him a platform. Although he knew that performing was his passion, he wasn’t completely sure if people would enjoy listening to his own music.
In early 2015, Chico decided to record his very first single; a song called “Two Roads”.
He was pleasantly surprised by the overwhelmingly positive response. “Two Roads” performed extremely well on East Coast Radio. The biggest thing that his first single did for him was silencing the doubts in his own mind, urging him to believe in his art.
Fired up and encouraged by his success, Chico decided that it was time to start saving up to record a demo album. In September 2016, he finally released his first ever EP called: “Love And Other Things”. The EP was warmly received. It received glowing reviews from Texx And The City, and a few other reviewers. The Launch venue was packed to the brim, and ECR decided to playlist another one of his songs (from the EP) called “What Love Is”.
Chico has performed alongside some of the most well renowned Acts in the country. He has also performed on the biggest stages that KZN has to offer.
In just two short years he went from playing in bars and pubs, to performing on platforms like the Ballito Pro, Splashy Fen and Music At The Lake, to name but a few.
After 2 years of amazing musical success in KZN, Chico decided that it was time for a change.
That change came in the shape of a one way ticket to Cape Town on the 28th of March 2017.
His songs are catchy, melodic and warm; just like his personality. He describes his music as a cocktail mix of acoustic folk and pop.
His electric stage presence, combined with his easy to sing along songs, make his performances captivating.
Chico Muya is, without a doubt, born for the stage.
