Caster Semenya is one of South Africa’s most accomplished athletes and one of the most recognisable figures in international athletics. A dominant middle-distance runner, she is a two-time Olympic champion and three-time World Champion in the 800m, with a career defined by exceptional performance, resilience and determination.
Caster won her first 800m World Championship title in Berlin in 2009, aged just 18. She went on to claim World Championship titles in 2011 and 2017, as well as Olympic gold at London 2012 and Rio 2016. At the 2017 World Championships she also won bronze in the 1500m.
Her achievements extend across multiple distances. At the 2018 Commonwealth Games, she completed an impressive double by winning gold in both the 800m and 1500m. She has also won African Games and African Championship titles and recorded South African records across several middle-distance events. Her 800m personal best of 1:54.25, achieved in 2018, remains the South African national record.
In recognition of her contribution to South African sport, Caster was awarded the Order of Ikhamanga in Bronze by the Presidency of South Africa.
