Motivational. Inspirational
Based: Cape Town
Brett Archibald is a South African businessman, author and international inspirational speaker whose extraordinary story of survival is a powerful testament to resilience, mental strength, hope and the human will to survive.
In April 2013, Brett was on a surfing trip in Indonesia when his life changed dramatically. While making a night crossing of the Mentawai Strait, he became severely ill with food poisoning and, during a violent storm, blacked out and fell overboard. No one saw him fall. By the time his friends realised he was missing, approximately eight hours had passed.
Brett would spend an astonishing 28½ hours alone in the Indian Ocean, far from land and without a life jacket. During the ordeal he battled exhaustion, dehydration and hallucinations while enduring encounters with jellyfish, Portuguese man-of-war, seabirds and a shark. Against extraordinary odds, he remained alive until he was eventually spotted and rescued.
His experience became the subject of his internationally published book Alone: Lost Overboard in the Indian Ocean, a gripping account not only of physical survival, but of the psychological battle that takes place when an individual is pushed beyond what they believe they can endure.
BRETT ARCHIBALD AS A SPEAKER
Brett brings his remarkable experience to the corporate stage through compelling, authentic storytelling. His presentation takes audiences into those 28½ hours — the fear, isolation, moments of despair, mental decisions and determination that ultimately contributed to his survival.
Importantly, Brett also brings significant business and leadership experience to his presentations. Prior to becoming a sought-after speaker, he built an international corporate career that included senior and directorship positions within the hospitality and travel industry in Johannesburg, Sydney, Hong Kong and London.
This combination of extreme survival and real-world business experience allows Brett to translate his story into lessons relevant to organisations and individuals facing uncertainty, adversity and change.
His central message is about understanding what happens when circumstances are beyond your control — and recognising that you can still control how you think, what you focus on and whether you continue moving forward.
