Bombshelter Beast is one of South Africa’s most original and exhilarating live music collectives — a large-scale Johannesburg ensemble that throws musical convention out the window and brings together some of the country’s finest musicians, vocalists and improvisers.
Formed in Johannesburg in 2015 by acclaimed South African jazz trumpeter and composer Marcus Wyatt, Bombshelter Beast grew from music Wyatt originally created for the South African film project Taka Takata. What began as a collision between Balkan-inspired sounds and Johannesburg music developed into a formidable live band with its own unmistakable identity.
The collective describes its sound as a “Jozi-mixed grill” — an energetic fusion of old-school kwaito, house, Balkan music, ska, dub, dancehall, hip-hop, Ghoema, Boeremusiek, drum & bass, rock and jazz, driven by a powerful brass section, percussion, rap, vocals and spontaneous live improvisation.
The result is difficult to categorise and almost impossible to stand still to.
Bombshelter Beast’s large and fluid line-up has brought together an extraordinary collection of South African musicians and performers. The ensemble has included Marcus Wyatt, Sisonke Xonti, Romy Brauteseth, Justin Badenhorst, Alex Hitzeroth, Siya Makuzeni, Janus van der Merwe and numerous guest performers, with collaborations over the years featuring artists such as Pitch Black Afro, Mapaputsi and Zolani Mahola.
Music & Releases
Their debut album, Dance of the Chicken, introduced audiences to the full Bombshelter Beast experience, including tracks such as “Taka Takata” and “Madam Bliss.”
In June 2025, the band returned with the 15-track album Listen Properly, demonstrating that the Beast remains very much alive. The album includes tracks such as “Gold (for Uncle Hugh),” “Colonial Mentality,” “Weekend Special,” “This Is South Africa,” “Habanera” and “Nama Oompah.”
Live Performance
It is on stage that Bombshelter Beast truly comes into its own.
Part concert, part musical carnival and part controlled chaos, their performances combine a large brass-driven ensemble, multiple vocalists, rappers, theatrical personalities and exceptional instrumentalists into an energetic celebration of South African music and culture.
Their live performances have earned the collective a reputation for creating an immediate connection with audiences, moving effortlessly between sophisticated musicianship and an all-out dance-floor experience.
Bombshelter Beast has appeared at festivals and music venues across Southern Africa, including MTN Bushfire, while continuing to perform prominently on Johannesburg’s live music circuit.
