Chris Bakalanga is a Congolese-born, Cape Town-based singer, guitarist and songwriter whose vibrant sound blends Congolese Soukous and Kwassa Kwassa with Afro-pop, folk and contemporary African music.
Born in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Chris began playing music at an early age, initially as a percussionist before developing into an accomplished guitarist and vocalist. After moving to South Africa, he became an established figure within Cape Town’s diverse African and world-music scene.
Chris has performed and collaborated with prominent artists and groups including Freshlyground, Simphiwe Dana, Hot Water, The Moreira Project and Afro-Fiesta.
A major career milestone came when Chris joined the internationally acclaimed South African band Freshlyground, bringing his distinctive Congolese Soukous guitar style to the group’s sound. He remains part of Freshlyground’s current six-piece line-up.
Chris is also the lead vocalist and guitarist of Congo Cowboys, the innovative Cape Town group combining American country and bluegrass with Congolese Soukous and Kwassa Kwassa rhythms. The band gained international exposure through the Apple TV+ music competition series My Kind of Country, taking their uniquely African interpretation of country music to Nashville.
As a solo artist, Chris released the EP Amisowe, featuring tracks including “Nasala Boni,” “Lamuka,” “Mosala Bandeko” and “Losako.” His music showcases his warm vocals, exceptional guitar playing and strong Central African musical heritage.
