Based: Uganda
ACT Katwe is a dynamic acrobatic circus performance troupe based in the vibrant community of Katwe, Kampala, Uganda. Founded in 2019, ACT (short for Acrobatics Circus Troupe) was established to empower local children through creative performance, discipline and mentorship, using acrobatics, gymnastics, dance and circus arts as a vehicle for positive change in one of East Africa’s most challenging urban environments.
At its core, ACT Katwe combines high-impact physical performance with community development and youth empowerment. The troupe provides its members — many of whom come from under-resourced backgrounds — with structured training in acrobatics, juggling, balancing, teamwork and choreography. Alongside artistic training, the organisation emphasises life skills such as trust, patience, discipline and resilience that serve its young performers both on and off the stage.
Mission & Impact
From its humble beginnings as a small group learning to juggle, ACT Katwe has grown into a non-profit performing arts organisation supporting hundreds of youth in the Katwe community. Their mission is to provide a free, safe and supportive space where children and teenagers can find joy, build confidence and develop practical skills that help them resist negative influences like drugs, gang activity and social exclusion.
In addition to performance training, ACT Katwe’s programs include:
-
Daily practice and performance preparation, fostering teamwork and personal discipline.
-
Support services such as daily meals, fresh water and access to basic resources for all members.
-
Educational support, including school supplies and scholastic assistance, improving access to learning opportunities.
All participation is offered free of charge, funded through donor support and partnerships that enable ACT to reach as many youth as possible.
Performance Style & Appeal
ACT Katwe’s live shows are high-energy, visually striking and engaging, blending acrobatics, gymnastics, dance, choreography and team pyramids into performances that captivate audiences of all ages. Whether performing at cultural showcases, corporate events or community festivals, their routines demonstrate extraordinary athleticism and creativity — a testament to the talent and dedication of their young performers.
Their appeal lies not just in spectacle but in the story behind the performance — each act represents resilience, hope and the transformative power of art in a community that faces daily socio-economic challenges.
