Zoe “The Seed” Masuku is an Eswatini-born, South African-based jazz vocalist, songwriter, composer and music educator whose distinctive musical identity brings together contemporary jazz, African musical traditions, soul and storytelling.
Based in Durban, Zoe holds a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz and Popular Music from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). Her Swazi upbringing introduced her to soul and gospel music from an early age, influences which later merged with jazz during her formal musical studies.
Zoe’s sound is expressive and exploratory, drawing on African modal traditions, contemporary jazz, soul, gospel, reggae and other popular musical forms. At the heart of her work is storytelling: her original compositions explore themes of love, resilience, identity, community and social consciousness, while celebrating African experiences and cultural heritage.
Proud of her roots, Zoe writes and performs original material in her native siSwati, bringing language and cultural identity into a contemporary jazz environment. Her approach to music reflects a strong belief in Ubuntu, community and the wisdom carried through generations.
Zoe began building her professional career as part of Heels Over Head, the acclaimed Durban-based all-female jazz ensemble. The group received a South African Music Award (SAMA) nomination, providing an important platform in the development of her career before she established herself as a solo artist.
Over the years, Zoe has performed alongside some highly respected names in South African and international jazz, including Nduduzo Makhathini, Sibusiso Mashiloane, Salim Washington and Ernest Dawkins. She has also collaboratedated with numerous leading musicians within KwaZulu-Natal’s vibrant jazz community.
Her festival and concert appearances include the National Youth Jazz Festival in Makhanda, where she presented her own work in 2024, as well as regular performances at UKZN’s respected Centre for Jazz and Popular Music.
Alongside her career as a performer, Zoe is passionate about music education and community development. She runs The Seed Vocal Studio, through which she provides vocal training, and has been involved in workshops introducing young people and communities to jazz and music education.
Zoe is equally at home performing intimate jazz arrangements and original African compositions or interpreting carefully selected jazz, soul and contemporary classics. She can perform in a range of configurations depending on the event, making her an excellent choice for corporate functions, cocktail receptions, gala dinners, conferences, cultural programmes, jazz festivals and sophisticated hospitality environments.
