Based: Johannesburg
The foot stomping, skirt lifting, shoulder popping musical bliss of Pretoria-based band December Streets has been caressing the ears of many since 2009. In 2010 the beat lyric combos of Tristan Coetzee (vocals and guitar) and Gideon Meyer (bass and sax) united with Afro-funk player Nico van Loggerenberg (lead guitar), the stick twirling Corneil Clasen (drums) and our very own SA born Satchmo, Waldo Boshoff (trumpet) to create the December Streets as you know them today.
December Streets, with their eclectic rhythms, slick beats, reggae/ska trumpet, symphonic trio of guitars and voices to match are uniting genres and people alike. Their style ranges, but the catchy beat-lyric combos found in songs like ‘Fire through the Window’ and ‘Who Needs Shoes’ are signature.
Together, the boys in the band are bringing fresh flavour to the SA scene. Their EP, released in 2011, featured campus hits ‘Fire through the Window’ and ‘Who Needs Shoes’, which both reached the number one position on TuksFM’s Most Wanted and SA Top 10 charts. More radio hits were added to the list with ‘My Name’, taking the number one spot on the 5FM Rock Chart and peaking at 16 on the 5FM Top 40.
In 2012 December Streets decided to record their debut album, “This Is”, after signing with 2 Feet Music (a division of Sheer Sound). The 15 track album is inspired by all the good times and great vibes that can be experienced throughout South Africa. With brilliant producers and the fact that the album has seen more of the world than December Streets; “This is” promises to express flow, fire, feeling and freedom.
December Streets continue to play at shows and festivals across the country including Splashy Fen and SA’s Big 5 (KZN), Oppikoppi and Aardklop (NW), VredeFest (GP), MK Avontoer and Up The Creek (WC).
Untainted authenticity, a contemporary yet pioneering sound and terribly addictive songs are all on the menu. Tune in!
