Former professional rugby player, radio presenter, TV commentator and motivational speaker are only a few titles to describe the versatile character of Ricky Schroeder. Fans might recognise him as the KFM Crew Presenter who starts of their weekends on the Weekend Breakfast Showwith Ryan O’Connor, or the Supersport commentator bracing their screens at rugby matches, but that is only the tip of the ice berg when it comes to Ricky’s career achievements.
Born in Worcester in the Western Cape and moving to Cape Town at the age of seven, Rickyattended Paul Roos Gymnasium from which he matriculated in 2009. He studied at the University of Cape Town, but soon had to leave his studies behind and move to greener pastures in Johannesburg to start his professional rugby career with The Lions.
Ricky started playing rugby at the age of six and represented the Western Province at u/12, u/ 13, u/16, u/18, u/19 and u/21 level as player and captain. Attracted to the fact that you can physically push yourself to the limit on the rugby field, he later also represented WP at senior lever from 2011 – 2013 in the SA u/20 team. From 2013 – 2016 he went on to represent The Golden Lions before moving to Southern Kings at the end of 2016 – 2018, where he playedSuper Rugby and also captained the EP Kings Currie Cup in 2017. Besides the opportunity to travel the world, rugby has also taught him many life lessons such as working hard towards your goals and how to function in a team environment.
Fans can also hear Ricky on KFM as Crew Presenter as well as on the Weekend Breakfast Showwith Ryan O’Connor. Ricky sees radio as a platform to bring a smile to people’s faces whilst creating a beautiful picture with words. He is also with Supersport as commentator where he has covered the u18 Craven Week, Varsity 7s Tournament and Guinness Pro 14 matches.
Inspired by his own journey, experiences and challenges over the past 28 years, Ricky is also an avid motivational speaker who gives talks at schools, churches and youth development programmes. In 2018 he also presented two ‘Public Speaking’ seminars at the Lighthouse Family Ministries Church in Cape Town.
Ricky is also involved with Enhanced Sports as motivational speaker; a company focused on developing fundamental sport skills for girls and bots at schools. He is also spearheading the development of their rugby branch, facilitating coaching clinics and skills sessions.
As MC, Ricky officially represents the Cape Town City FC where he is host at all their home matches at Cape Town Stadium, as well as all their official events, functions and activations. Through KFM, he has also played the role of MC to other clients and activations such as Huawei, The Discovery Retro Run, Coca Cola World Cup Launch, Killarney Race Days, Cartoon Network Events, Cape Town Carnival Launch and many more. He was also the official MC forThe Table Bay Hotel Year End Awards held in December 2018.

Being blessed with a fortunate background, Ricky believes in giving back and using his power and platform to create opportunities for other people; thus he has also MC’d numerous charity events such as the Be The Difference Foundation Sports Day black tie dinner. He also hosted theWestern Province Capping Ceremony as MC, as well as Chad Saaiman’sCS Fives Football Tournament held at Century City.
Ricky currently resides in Parow in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town. In his free time he enjoys playing golf, fishing, hiking and anything active.
