Based in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, Quiet Storm is an accomplished and versatile live band known for its sophisticated blend of jazz, Afro-jazz, fusion and Latin jazz, delivered by some of Durban’s most respected musicians.
At the heart of Quiet Storm is renowned pianist, keyboardist, composer and music educator Susan “Sue” Barry, whose career has made a significant contribution to the KwaZulu-Natal music landscape. A highly respected jazz musician and educator, Barry worked extensively with celebrated South African artist Busi Mhlongo for approximately 20 years and has performed alongside numerous leading musicians during her career.
Susan Barry’s contribution extends well beyond the stage. As an educator, she has played an important role in mentoring and developing emerging South African musicians, with a number of her students going on to establish successful professional careers. In recognition of her contribution to music in the province, she received a Living Legend Award from the eThekwini Municipality.
Quiet Storm has been performing on the Durban and KwaZulu-Natal music circuit for many years, establishing a reputation for polished musicianship and an easy, sophisticated live sound. Their repertoire moves effortlessly between South African favourites, jazz standards, Afro-jazz, fusion and Latin-influenced material, allowing the band to create anything from relaxed background ambience to a more vibrant and engaging live performance.
The band has featured accomplished Durban musicians including respected bassist Philani Ngidi, who has performed with artists such as Busi Mhlongo, Ray Phiri, Ernie Smith and Judith Sephuma, alongside other experienced vocalists and instrumentalists.
One of Quiet Storm’s strengths is its flexible line-up. The group can be configured from an intimate small ensemble through to a larger live band, depending on the event, venue and budget.
