Early Life & Education
Born 5 November 1968 in Johannesburg, South Africa
Earned degrees from four universities: BSc in Human Movement (Stellenbosch), B.A. Hons in Biokinetics (Port Elizabeth), an MSc in Sport Science (Cape Town), and an MA in Coaching (Middlesex)
Later became a Professor of Practice at Deakin University, Australia
Strength & Conditioning Coach
In 1994, at age 25, became the full-time Strength & Conditioning Coach for the South African national cricket team until 1998
Briefly served as fitness coach for the Western Province rugby team in 1999
Transition to Mental Conditioning
Pivoted from strength to mental coaching after earning his second master’s in Business Coaching (2003), influenced by observing coaching gaps in athlete preparation
Since then, coached over 100 professional athletes across 11 sports and multiple continentions.
Cricket Achievements
Joined Indian Cricket Team (2008), partnering with Gary Kirsten as mental conditioning & strategic leadership coach. Helped India reach #1 in Test rankings (2009) and win the 2011 ICC World Cup
Appointed Performance Director of the South African team (2011–2014). Under his tenure, Proteas simultaneously held the #1 ranking in all formats from 2012–2015
T20 Coaching Success
Head coach in 12 T20 seasons for IPL, BBL, and PSL across five franchises: Pune Warriors, Rajasthan Royals (IPL), Delhi Daredevils, Sydney Thunder (BBL), and Lahore Qalandars (PSL)
Achieved a dramatic turnaround with Sydney Thunder, leading them from last place to 2016 BBL champions
Cross-Sport & Recent Role
Engaged by Indian Hockey Team in 2023 for mental conditioning ahead of the Asian Games
In 2024, supported India’s chess prodigy Dommaraju Gukesh as a mental coach during the World Championship
