Nanette, whose full name is Sphesihle Nobethu Mbili Jolobe, is a Durban-born South African R&B singer and songwriter. She began pursuing music professionally in 2020 and has developed a reputation for her smooth vocals, emotionally honest songwriting and soulful contemporary sound.
Nanette grew up listening to influential R&B, soul and gospel artists including Whitney Houston, Brandy, Janet Jackson and Beyoncé. These influences helped shape her distinctive approach to songwriting, which she describes as therapeutic and deeply connected to personal experiences and emotions.
Her breakthrough came with her 2022 debut album, Bad Weather, which received a South African Music Award nomination for Best R&B Album. She was also selected as Apple Music’s Up Next Artist for South Africa, placing her among the country’s promising emerging R&B artists.
Nanette has collaborated with several prominent South African artists, including Kelvin Momo, Blxckie, Nasty C, Emtee and the Major League DJz. Her collaborations with Kelvin Momo, particularly Fool Me and Imfula, helped introduce her music to a much wider audience.
Her follow-up project, The Waiting Room, continued to showcase her growth as a vocalist and songwriter, while her later album Painfully Happy explored themes of family, identity, loss, healing and personal growth. Her song Abazali pays tribute to the family members who played an important role in raising and shaping her.
Nanette’s career has continued to grow through major collaborations and live performances. In 2026, she was selected to perform alongside international R&B star Ella Mai at the GrandWest Grand Arena in Cape Town, marking an important milestone in her live performance career.
With her soulful voice, vulnerability and modern R&B sound, Nanette represents a new generation of South African artists taking local R&B to wider audiences.
