Mashabela Galane, affectionately known as “Papago,” is an award-winning South African comedian, actor, musician, entrepreneur and corporate entertainer, widely recognised as one of the pioneers who helped bring vernacular comedy into the South African mainstream.
Originally from Moletjie in Limpopo, Mashabela discovered stand-up while studying at Wits University, where he completed a BA Honours in Dramatic Arts, with studies in media and events management. His decision to perform comedy in Sepedi became a defining feature of his career, using everyday South African experiences, relationships, family and culture to connect authentically with audiences.
His breakthrough included appearing on the popular Strictly Vernac comedy production, followed by successful shows such as Rock My Mother Tongue and Comedy Under the Sun. In 2016 he won the Comics’ Choice Native Tongue Award, cementing his position as one of the country’s leading vernacular comedians.
Mashabela’s talents extend beyond comedy. He received a South African Music Awards nomination for Best Kwaito Album for Bona That Rural Dream, becoming notable for successfully crossing between comedy and music. As an actor, his credits include the internationally acclaimed film District 9 as well as South African television, film and theatre productions.
He is also an entrepreneur, having developed ventures including Rare Moringa Gin, which received Double Gold at the 2018 Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards.
As a corporate comedian and MC, Mashabela combines intelligent observational humour, cultural insight and an engaging stage presence. His ability to perform in both English and Sepedi makes him particularly effective for diverse South African audiences, conferences, awards evenings, gala dinners and corporate celebrations.
