Lihle Ngongoma is a glamorous and soulful young singer with an arresting stage presence. She won ETV Popstars in 2010 where she was chosen from 8000 auditions countrywide. Although she won a pop competition, she sings in a variety of styles, including Show Tunes, Jazz Standards, Funk, African traditional, Afro pop, Afro jazz, Soul, RnB and Latin.
Lihle was born in the Valley of a thousand hills in Kwanqetho in 1988 and has been exposed to traditional music and dance from an early age. She matriculated from Inanda Seminary in 2006.
She studied towards the diploma in Jazz and Popular Music at UKZN from 2007 to 2009.
Perfomance Experience
2003-2006 Formed a traditional music and dance group at Inanda Seminary whilst in Grade 9 which performed at functions.
Lead soloist in the school choir and leader of school songs. Lead roles in school plays. In 2006 she put together an All girls gumboot dance group, did all the choreography herself and they performed at school functions.
2007-2010 Recorded backing vocals for top Mozambican guitarist, Zoco Dimande’s debut album produced by Philani Ngidi.
Started to work as lead singer with Susan Barry; Philani Ngidi and Zoco Dimande in the band Afro Blue. They played various functions, festivals, weddings and private parties. For the world cup they played forPresident Zuma and perfomed in the festivals around the city. In 2008 she put together the band Mutility which won the UKZN Music Festival competition. The band went on to win the best student band nationally in a competition held in Joburg. The band performed for many of Derrick Mhlongo’s IGALELO fashion shows.
In late 2010 she won ETV Popstars. Then she moved to Joburg and started to perform with Nne-vida, the Popstars group. They Performed all over the country for various festivals and functions
She did the SHOUT campaign with Nne-vida. Performed on YoTV; CrazE and did a Roadshow around South Africa with the casts of Scandal and Rhythm City.
As an individual she did various radio and TV ads including the ad for the Joy of Jazz 2011 and for Always Ultra.
She also recorded the music for the movie Zambezia with Zwai Bala.Was featured on House tracks with Dj Tira. These tracks received a considerable amount of airplay.
Performed in a big concert with the Durban Maputo Connection (which is a collaboration of musicians from Durban and Maputo) in the Centro Culturaal De Franco-Mozambicaan in Maputo.
In 2012 She Returned to Durban to work on the concept for her solo act.
In 2013 she Recorded a House track with Dj Bax which is receiving Airplay and is doing well in the club scene.
In 2019 Lihle Entered The renowned Jazz Competition called” The Emirates Pursuit Of Jazz” they were looking to form an 8 member Super Band from Musicians from around South Africa. The Judges were “Sipho Hotstix Mabuza, Zwai Bala Nothemba Nodumo” , Lihle was selected as one of the 2 vocalists to Join the band among a thousand vocalists that entered. This proves that Lihles Diversity is wide. She also featured on Deep Breaths New Album on a song called “Through the Fire”. which has just recently been nominated for A Sama Award.
Lihle is passionate and dedicated to her craft and continues to grow as an artist everyday.
