Lia Butler, born Nombulelo Mzobe, is a Durban-born South African singer, songwriter and storyteller who is developing a distinctive musical identity through a sound she calls Neo-Zulu. Her music blends elements of Neo-Soul, R&B, Umbhaqanga, Maskandi and traditional Amahubo, combining contemporary soul with the musical heritage of her upbringing.
Lia grew up in a musical family in Durban, where singing was part of everyday life. Her musical influences range from gospel and traditional Zulu music to artists such as Simphiwe Dana, Thandiswa Mazwai, Lira, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Busi Mhlongo and SZA. Discovering SZA’s music was an important turning point in Lia’s decision to pursue a professional career as a singer.
She initially gained attention through covers and independent releases, before developing her own catalogue of original music. Her releases include songs such as STE (Smiling Through Everything), Isiqephu, U C U and Imimangaliso. Her music has received exposure on major South African radio platforms, helping to establish her as an emerging voice in contemporary African music.
Lia’s career has also taken her beyond South Africa. She has worked as a backing vocalist and has performed alongside established artists, including legendary South African musician Madala Kunene. She has also collaborated with contemporary artists from South Africa’s hip-hop, R&B and alternative music scenes.
Her approach to music is strongly rooted in storytelling. Drawing from her experiences growing up in Durban and the cultural environment around her, Lia uses her music to explore identity, relationships, emotions and everyday life while preserving elements of her Zulu heritage.
