Elani consists of three members: Maureen Kunga, Wambui Ngugi and Brian Chweya. The group has established itself as a recognised name in East African contemporary music, with a sound combining expressive vocals, melodic arrangements and engaging live performances.
Professional Biography
Formed in 2008 after the members met at the Alliance Française in Nairobi, Elani developed a shared passion for songwriting, vocal harmonies and contemporary African music.
The trio gained national recognition in 2013 with the release of their debut single, Jana Usiku, which quickly became popular on Kenyan radio. Their debut album, Barua ya Dunia, released in December 2013, established them as an exciting new voice in East African music.
Their distinctive sound blends Afropop, contemporary R&B, neo-soul and traditional African musical influences, creating a melodic and accessible style. Their music is characterised by beautiful vocal harmonies, thoughtful songwriting, rhythmic arrangements and relatable themes of love, relationships and everyday life.
Following their breakthrough, Elani released several successful singles, including Milele, Kookoo, Zuzu, Hapo Zamani and Nikupende. Their popularity extended beyond Kenya, attracting audiences throughout East Africa.
In 2014, the group received the Best African Pop Award at the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) and earned a nomination at the Channel O Music Video Awards for Kookoo.
Elani also collaborated with renowned Ugandan musician Jose Chameleone on the song My Darling, demonstrating their cross-border appeal and versatility.
Their later releases, including Heartbeat, Joto, Only You and Nimejaribu, continued to showcase their sophisticated approach to contemporary African music.
