Based: Cape town
Don’t Poke The Bear bring 10 years of lyrical day dreams and burning ambition to live, in raw live performances for audiences across South Africa. This original and cover band has been likened to Kings of Leon, with influences of John Mayer, Jack Johnson & Jason Mraz.
In 2013, lead singer and frontman Daniel Marc Cowen and drummer Tammy Lee started performing original and cover songs on stages in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Playing an acoustic guitar, an old djembe and bongo drums, they shaped melodies with intense lyrics. As Don’t Poke The Bear they established a unique, yet recognizable style. Covers feature less and the original song list has grown, supported by the addition of a full drum kit and a third band member, bassist Adrian Ziller.
The band’s first EP was recorded and produced by David Grevlar of Anti-Motion Studios. It showcases their song writing skills and depth of talent. Tracks offer a contrast of witty lyrics and playful melodies, together with raw vocal emotion. Over the years the band has refined these songs, however, you can still hear the passion and integrity that resonated with them from the start. The true vision of the songwriter remains. Their second EP is currently in production, however the first single, “Broken”, has been released across all Digital Platforms & is already being play-listed on numerous stations.
