Based: Cape Town

Born in Johannesburg with roots in the Eastern Cape, Deslynn is a Cape Town girl by heart. A singer, songwriter and performer, Deslynn is a lover of the arts in the purist form. While others pursue the industry for money or fame – Deslynn simply loves music and the opportunity she has to share a good message and make people feel good, whole and happy.

Deslynn is almost quiet and sometimes loud. Her vibrant personality and subtle demeanor is neither too much nor too little, she floats eloquently between both worlds. Her gentle style of dance and soulful singing do not remove high energy and hard hitting performance from her repertoire which on any given day can include her weighty originals and familiar covers.

Deslynn released her self-titled EP, “Deslynn” in 2014. The EP is Deslynn’s first offering on record and enjoys success on local radio. “How” – a cinematic love ballad placed number 1 on the Hunters SA Top Ten (Heart FM) on 12 June 2014 where it remained for 2 weeks. The song was also ranked 8th in the Hunters SA Top 10 chart for the year 2014 while other songs on the EP dabble in Reggae, Soul and House.

A graduate of the Campus of Performing Arts (COPA) in Cape Town where she majored in Vocal Performance under the guidance of Claudia Mohr and Emily Bruce of “Gold Fish” acclaim; Deslynn accredits her musical prowess and passion to the influence of her father. The late Desmond Malotana was the founder, band leader and keyboardist for well known 80’s band, “Brenda and the Big Dudes”. He wrote and produced songs like “Promises” and the hit single, “Weekend Special” among others.

Residing in Grassy Park, Deslynn is actively involved in various social development initiatives such as an annual talent competition at South Peninsula High School (her former high school) and “Buy a Brick Build a School” which raises funds to build schools for children in the Congo. She would love to continue working with youth and empowering communities in future.

Deslynn commonly performs in and around Cape Town with the backing of local band Blackkurrant and a host of other capable musicians. Her set can be bundled into an intimate acoustic memoir or lively five piece party suitable for any occasion, big or small.

Apart from singing, Deslynn believes she has a knack for events and might dabble in this pressure driven field while having fun with her career as a performing artist. Though Deslynn has never penned lyrics for anyone else, she may also add this feather to her hat as a challenge to self in 2015.

Deslynn is steadily coming into her own and she is inviting you to share in the journey. She vouches for realism and begins her plea for authenticity within herself. Learn more about
Deslynn by following her story and listening to her music – one day and one song at a time.
