David Kau is a South African stand-up comedian, actor, writer, producer, and filmmaker known for pioneering modern stand-up comedy for Black performers in South Africa. He is especially famous for creating and hosting the Blacks Only Comedy Show, which helped launch many comedians’ careers.
David Kau is a prominent South African comedian and entertainment entrepreneur who rose to fame in the late 1990s. Through his stand-up shows, television work, and the Blacks Only comedy brand, he has played a key role in shaping the South African comedy scene.

Kau grew up in South Africa and completed his schooling in Pretoria. He later studied Speech and Drama at the University of Cape Town, graduating in 1998.

Interestingly, Kau originally planned to study electrical engineering but later switched to acting and drama while at university.

Comedy Career
David Kau started his stand-up comedy career in 1998 when he performed at the Smirnoff International Comedy Festival in Cape Town. He became the first Black comedian to perform at the festival, marking an important moment in South African comedy.

He later toured the country with his first one-man show called “The Rainbow Nation Tour.” Over the years, he became one of the most recognizable comedians in the country and performed at many comedy festivals locally and internationally.

Blacks Only Comedy Show
In 2004, Kau launched the Blacks Only Comedy Show, a comedy event designed to create a platform for Black comedians. The show became very influential in South Africa and helped popular comedians gain exposure. It also challenged the racial barriers that existed in the comedy industry after apartheid.
