Based: Johannesburg
BONJ is a Johannesburg-based South African singer-songwriter known for a powerful, soulful voice and a sound that blends electronic music with soul, groove and broad African and urban influences. Born and raised in Soweto, she began singing in church and later studied at the National School of the Arts before continuing her jazz studies at the University of Cape Town.
Her musical style moves fluidly across pop, gospel, jazz, R&B, soul, house and kwaito, giving her a versatile identity that works equally well in live performance and recorded music. After relocating back to Johannesburg, BONJ signed with Jacquel Entertainment Group in partnership with Universal Music Group, and went on to build a catalogue that includes her 2021 debut project A Journal. That release was nominated for Best Pop Album at the 2022 South African Music Awards, with songs from the album also featured in Coming 2 America and Netflix’s Happiness Ever After.
BONJ has also collaborated with a range of respected South African artists and producers, including DJ Zinhle, Anatii, Card On Spokes, Easy Freak, Black Motion and others. More recently, OkayAfrica reported that she has continued balancing her solo career with work in production, artist development and touring, while preparing to return with new music on her own terms.
With a stage presence that is both commanding and emotionally resonant, BONJ is a strong fit for premium live events, contemporary music programming, festivals and sophisticated corporate functions looking for an artist with both vocal power and crossover appeal.
