Angel Campey is a multi-award-winning South African comedian, radio presenter, television comedy writer and corporate MC, known for her razor-sharp observational humour, quick wit and ability to connect naturally with audiences. Based in Cape Town, she has built a diverse career spanning stand-up comedy, commercial radio, television writing and live events.
Angel began her stand-up career in 2011 on Cape Town’s Long Street comedy circuit and has since performed at major comedy clubs, festivals and arena shows throughout South Africa. Internationally, her comedy has taken her to New York City, Montreal’s Just For Laughs Comedy Festival, Lagos, Dar es Salaam and Nairobi, performing alongside some of Africa’s leading comedians.
She has created two acclaimed solo comedy shows, Yes, Really Angel, directed by Nik Rabinowitz, and Devil’s Advocate, which toured from the National Arts Festival to Cape Town’s Baxter Theatre. She has also appeared on Comedy Central Africa and the popular Kings and Queens of Comedy platform.
Alongside comedy, Angel has established herself as a prominent radio personality. She joined Smile 90.4FM in 2017 and currently hosts The JoyRide with Angel Campey, the station’s weekday afternoon drive show from 16:00–19:00. Her radio work earned her the 2020 South African Comedy Award for Top Comedian on Radio, while her previous drive team was nominated for a South African Radio Award for Best Commercial Drive Show.
Angel is equally accomplished behind the camera. She spent more than four years writing for the internationally Emmy-nominated political satire ZAnews: Puppet Nation, earning Screenwriters’ Guild of South Africa MUSE Awards and a 2018 SAFTA for Best Achievement in TV Comedy Scriptwriting. Her credits also include the SAFTA-winning Point of Order, Comedy Mixtape and the 2022 SAFTA-winning online political satire Politically Aweh.
