Andrea Thonyiwa, popularly known as Mr Jokes, is a prominent Malawian stand-up comedian, actor, producer and entertainer who has built a distinctive career around observational humour and storytelling rooted in everyday Malawian life. Performing predominantly in Chichewa, he has developed a strong connection with local audiences through comedy that explores relationships, family life, religion, politics, education, economic realities and contemporary social issues.
Thonyiwa has been active in Malawi’s comedy industry for many years and has produced an extensive catalogue of recorded stand-up material. His work and popularity have become significant enough to be examined academically: a chapter in the 2022 book Stand-up Comedy in Africa: Humour in Popular Languages and Media specifically explores Mr Jokes and his position within Malawian popular culture.
Beyond stand-up, Andrea has expanded into acting and film production. His screen projects include Ife Ndi Achikhalidwe, Fisi, Silent Marriage, Batchala Pa Line and Jacaranda. Ife Ndi Achikhalidwe brought together a cast of established Malawian performers and used comedy and drama to examine cultural traditions and their relevance in contemporary society.
A confident live performer, Mr Jokes has continued to headline comedy events, including his An Experience With Mr Jokes Comedy Night at the Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre, where his material moved between English and Chichewa and addressed topical social and economic issues.
