Alex Jay is one of South Africa’s most recognisable and enduring radio personalities, with a broadcasting career spanning more than four decades. Known for his distinctive voice, quick wit, extensive music knowledge and natural connection with audiences, Alex has become a familiar name across generations of South African listeners.
Alex began his professional radio career at 702 in 1983, initially presenting late-night radio before moving into afternoon drive. In 1986, he joined Radio 5 — now 5FM — where he became one of the station’s defining personalities. He spent more than 17 years with the station, including nearly eight years presenting its national breakfast show.
Following his years at 5FM, Alex joined 94.7 Highveld Stereo (now 947), initially as a freelance presenter before taking over the station’s afternoon drive show in 2004. His ability to combine music, humour, entertainment and personality has remained central to his longevity on South African radio.
Today, Alex is part of the Jacaranda FM line-up, presenting The Workzone with Alex Jay, weekdays from 12:00 to 16:00. The show combines music with Alex’s trademark commentary, humour, music trivia and interaction with listeners.
Television & Entertainment
Beyond radio, Alex has enjoyed an extensive television career. His presenting credits include programmes such as Fast Forward, Graffiti, SaturJay Sundae, Looks 2 Live By, AM2Day and The Hot Seat. He has also worked professionally as an actor, musician, writer, radio producer, audio engineer and commercial voice-over artist.
Music has always been an integral part of Alex’s career. Before becoming one of the country’s best-known broadcasters, he performed keyboards and backing vocals, and his decades behind the microphone have given him an exceptional understanding of popular music and how to read an audience.
DJ & MC
As a professional DJ and MC, Alex brings the experience of a seasoned broadcaster together with an extensive knowledge of music and live entertainment. His personality, humour and polished microphone technique make him particularly well suited to corporate functions, gala dinners, awards evenings, conferences, launches, private celebrations and special events.
Whether behind the radio microphone, presenting on television, hosting a live event or taking control of the dance floor, Alex Jay brings decades of entertainment experience, professionalism and unmistakable personality to every performance.
